Powerscourt sits in the Wicklow Mountains barely 25 km south of Dublin, which makes it the rare headline attraction that does not require half a day in the car. The estate has two distinct parts, and they are about 6 km apart: the house and its formal gardens, and the waterfall.

The gardens run to 47 acres, laid out over roughly 150 years, with Italian terraces stepping down towards the Triton Lake and Sugarloaf Mountain framed behind it. Powerscourt Waterfall, on a separate part of the estate, is the highest in Ireland at 121 metres.
