A Tower House, Furnished as It Would Have Been

The castle standing at Bunratty today was built around 1425 by the MacNamara family, on a site that had held fortifications since the Vikings. What makes it unusual among Irish castles is not its age but its condition: it was restored in the 1950s and furnished with a collection of 15th- and 16th-century furniture, tapestries and art, so the rooms are dressed rather than empty.

Beside it, the Folk Park spreads over 26 acres - farmhouses, a working forge, a school, shops and a village street, reassembled and recreated to show rural Irish life around 1900. Between the two, most visitors spend two to three hours.

Snapshot for Planners

  • Distance: roughly 215 km each way from Dublin, mostly motorway
  • Typical day: 10-12 hours, or less if Bunratty is a stop rather than the destination
  • About 15 minutes from Shannon Airport, and directly on the road to the Cliffs of Moher
  • Private vehicle for 1-7 guests, flexible departure time

The Medieval Banquet

Bunratty has run a medieval banquet in the castle's Great Hall since 1963, with harpists, singers and a four-course meal eaten largely without cutlery. It is unashamedly theatrical and guests tend to either love it or find it too staged - but it has been running for six decades for a reason, and it books out well ahead in summer.

Sittings are in the evening, which changes the shape of the day considerably: a banquet usually means an overnight stay in Clare or Limerick rather than a return to Dublin the same night.

What Else Is Nearby

  • Cliffs of Moher – about an hour further west, and the usual pairing.
  • The Burren – the limestone landscape north of the cliffs.
  • Limerick city – 20 minutes away, with King John's Castle and the Hunt Museum.
  • Adare – the thatched village, about 40 minutes south.

FAQ

How long should we allow?
Two to three hours for the castle and Folk Park together.

Can we combine it with the Cliffs of Moher?
Yes, and most guests do - they are about an hour apart and make a natural full day.

Do we have to do the banquet?
Not at all; the castle and park are a daytime visit. The banquet is a separate evening booking and needs planning around.

Is it suitable for children?
The Folk Park in particular tends to work well for families, with animals and open space alongside the buildings.
