An Avenue Planted in the 1770s

The Dark Hedges are around 150 beech trees planted by the Stuart family in the 1770s along the approach to their Georgian mansion, Gracehill House. Two and a half centuries later the branches have grown into each other overhead, and the result is the tunnel in the photograph - one of the most photographed stretches of road anywhere in Ireland.

A much newer layer of fame arrived when the avenue appeared as the Kingsroad in Game of Thrones. Storms have taken several of the trees over the past decade, and roughly 90 remain, so the avenue is thinner than it was - it is still a remarkable thing to stand in.

Access - Worth Knowing Before You Go

Bregagh Road, the road through the avenue, is closed to through traffic to protect the tree roots. Vehicles cannot drive down it. Your chauffeur parks nearby - the Dark Hedges Hotel and designated parking areas are a short walk away - and you walk the avenue itself.

The other thing worth planning for is crowds. This is a narrow public road, not a managed attraction with timed entry, and in the middle of a summer day it can be busy enough to make a clean photograph difficult. Early morning is noticeably quieter, and the low light is better anyway.

What to Combine It With

• Giant's Causeway – about 30 minutes north, and the natural anchor for the day.
• Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge – roughly 20 minutes away, timed tickets.
• Dunluce Castle – the clifftop ruin on the Causeway Coast.
• Ballintoy Harbour – another filming location, and a genuinely pretty stop.

Can we drive through the avenue?
No. The road is closed to traffic to protect the roots. You park nearby and walk it.

Is it worth the trip on its own?
Honestly, no - the visit takes half an hour. It works best as a stop on a Causeway Coast day rather than a destination in itself.

When is it quietest?
Early morning, particularly outside July and August. Midday in summer is the busiest.

Is there an admission charge?
No, it is a public road. Only parking may cost anything.
