Older Than the Pyramids, an Hour from Dublin

Newgrange was built around 3200 BC. That makes it roughly five centuries older than the Great Pyramid at Giza and about a thousand years older than Stonehenge - and it is only about 50 km from Dublin, in the bend of the River Boyne.

Newgrange is one of three great passage tombs in the Brú na Bóinne complex, alongside Knowth and Dowth, together a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Knowth, pictured above, holds the largest collection of megalithic art known in western Europe. What draws most visitors to Newgrange specifically is the roof-box above the entrance: for a few mornings around the winter solstice, sunrise sends a beam of light straight down the 19-metre passage into the chamber.

How Visits Work - Read This Before You Go

You cannot drive to the monuments or turn up at them directly. All access is by guided tour departing from the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre, with a shuttle bus to the sites. Tours have limited capacity and sell out regularly in summer, so booking ahead is strongly advised rather than optional.

Access to the solstice chamber itself on the mornings around 21 December is allocated by an annual public lottery - it is not something that can be booked. Outside that, tours include a simulated version of the solstice light inside the chamber.

• Trim Castle – the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, about 30 minutes away.
• Hill of Tara – the ceremonial seat of the High Kings, a short drive south.
• Monasterboice – early Christian high crosses and a round tower.

Can we drive straight to Newgrange?
No. Every visit starts at the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre and continues by shuttle bus with a guide. Your chauffeur brings you to the centre and waits.

Do we need to book tickets in advance?
Yes, especially between May and September. Tour capacity is limited and same-day places often sell out.

Can we see the winter solstice sunrise inside the chamber?
Only through the annual public lottery run by the site - places cannot be bought or arranged privately. Standard tours include a simulation of the effect.

Is it worth combining with other sites?
Usually yes. Newgrange is close to Dublin, so most guests add Trim Castle or the Hill of Tara rather than driving back early.
