~50 km each way

Ireland's Largest Norman Castle

Trim Castle covers about three acres on the bank of the River Boyne, which makes it the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Hugh de Lacy began building it in 1176, and the great twenty-sided keep at its centre is still the thing that stops people in the car park - it is genuinely enormous, and it has survived far better than most castles of its age.

A newer layer of fame arrived in 1994, when the castle and its grounds were used as a filming location for Braveheart. Plenty of visitors arrive for that and leave more impressed by the 12th-century engineering.

Snapshot for Planners

  • Distance: roughly 50 km from Dublin - under an hour
  • Grounds can be walked freely; the keep interior is by guided tour only
  • Private vehicle for 1-7 guests, flexible departure time
  • Sits naturally alongside Newgrange and the Hill of Tara in one Boyne Valley day

What to Expect on Site

  • The keep – accessible only on a guided tour, which climbs to the roof for views over the town and the Boyne. Numbers per tour are limited.
  • The curtain walls – much of the original circuit survives, along with the gatehouses.
  • The riverside walk – the path along the Boyne gives the view in the photograph above, and costs nothing.
  • Trim town – compact and walkable, with the ruins of the Yellow Steeple facing the castle across the river.

Making a Day of It

Trim on its own is a half-day at most. Because it is so close to Dublin, it works best as part of a wider heritage day: Newgrange and the Brú na Bóinne passage tombs are about 30 minutes away, the Hill of Tara is closer still, and Clonmacnoise on the Shannon can be added for a fuller route west.

FAQ

Can we go inside the keep?
Yes, but only on a guided tour with limited places. The grounds and walls can be visited without one.

How long is the drive from Dublin?
Under an hour each way, which is why it is usually combined with other Boyne Valley sites rather than visited alone.

Was Braveheart really filmed here?
Yes, the castle and surrounding fields were used as a location in 1994.

What else can we add in the same day?
Newgrange, the Hill of Tara, Monasterboice or Clonmacnoise all pair well with Trim.
