Kissing the Stone - What It Actually Involves

Worth knowing in advance: you climb a narrow spiral staircase to the top of the keep, then lie on your back and lean backwards over a gap in the parapet while an attendant holds you. There are handrails and a safety grille, and staff do this all day, but it is not for everyone - and the staircase alone rules it out for some visitors. The gardens and grounds are entirely separate from the climb, so there is plenty to do either way.

Queues for the stone are longest in the middle of the day in summer. An early departure from Dublin usually means walking straight up.

What Else Fits in the Day

• Rock of Cashel – a medieval complex on a limestone outcrop, roughly halfway.
• Cobh – the harbour town that was the Titanic's last port of call, about 40 minutes from Blarney.
