Built Where the Ship Was Built

Titanic Belfast opened in 2012, a century after the sinking, and it stands on the exact site of the Harland & Wolff slipways where the ship was designed, built and launched. The building's four angular hulls are the same height as Titanic's bow - about 38 metres - and the empty slipways outside are marked out at full scale, which does more to convey the size of the ship than any model could.

Inside, nine galleries follow the story from Belfast's shipbuilding boom through the fit-out, the maiden voyage, the sinking and the wreck's discovery in 1985. It is a serious, well-made museum rather than a spectacle, and most visitors spend two to three hours there.

Belfast or the Causeway?

Belfast is roughly halfway between Dublin and the Giant's Causeway, so guests often ask whether both fit in one day. Technically yes - but it makes for a very long day with about six hours in the car and little time at either. Unless you are set on both, one or the other usually makes the better trip.
